4 Great Summer Day Trips For Seniors
If your senior loved one is getting bored at home the summer is a great time to take some day trips in your area. If you have to work and you can’t go with your senior parent on a day trip companion care at home is a good alternative. When your senior loved one has companion care at home they have a friend who can go with them to the movies or to the store or someone they can do games and activities with at home. And they have a friend to go with them on some fun day trips like these when you can’t go:
Botanical Gardens
Nearly every city has a botanical garden or some type of nature preserve. A botanical garden is a fantastic day trip for seniors because it gets them outside and enjoying some greenery and fresh air. And it also gives seniors the chance to get some exercise walking around the gardens. But the slow self-guided pace means that seniors who need to go slow can take their time without feeling like they are holding people up. Most botanical gardens also have paved paths through the gardens and around the grounds. That means that seniors who use walkers, canes, or wheel chairs can navigate the paths and enjoy the gardens easily.
Historical Places
When was the last time you visited some of the historical places in your area? Probably on a class trip when you were little. And that may be the last time your senior loved one went there too. Remember the past by spending the day at a historic battlefield, a recreated Colonial village, or touring a historical site that isn’t too far from your city. You can even bring your kids and start a family tradition of visiting the interesting historical places within a day’s drive of where you live.
Museums
Summer is the best time of the year to go to your local science museum or art museum because there won’t be big crowds of school children there in the summer the way there can be during the school year. Your senior parent will be able to wander around the museum at their own pace and enjoy all the exhibits in air conditioned comfort. A fun thing to do is look for small local museums in your area that you might not have seen before or tour historical homes in the area.
Petting Zoo Or Farm
Another great day trip idea is to take your senior parent to a petting farm or petting zoo. It might seem a little silly at first but your senior parent will love getting to spend time petting and feeding many different kinds of animals. This is a great activity to do with a parent who has dementia. Often seniors with dementia really enjoy being around animals but don’t have pets of their own so getting to spend time on a farm with goats, deer, cats, dogs, horses, alpacas, and other animals is something really fun for them.
