Caregiver of the Month – November / 2016
Caregiver in Grand Rapids MI
Every year just before the Thanksgiving holiday we gather our staff for a nice luncheon at Noto’s. We call it our Caregiver Appreciation Lunch, and in tandem with the holiday, we say “THANK YOU” to them for all their hard work.
We held this celebration on November 12th this year and at the end of our program we handed out our Caregiver of the Month Award to Helga Macik!
Some background on Helga…she came to us via a recommendation by our most wonderful scheduler, Jane, who happens to be Helga’s daughter! Yes, in a family oriented business like ours, nepotism is encouraged!
Helga emigrated from East Germany, alone, fearing the rise of the Nazi regime and the building of the Berlin wall when she was 19. She married, had three children (besides Jane, her daughter Donna lives in Philly, and son Donald is in Lowell) and spent many years doing factory work. Wanting more meaningful work after she retired, she signed up as a caregiver with us in January of this year.
A couple weeks ago I received a phone message from the daughter of one of Helga’s clients who lives in a retirement home. The daughter praised the work Helga was doing with her mom, and then explained that Helga noticed that one of the residents had not come down to the common room that morning to sit by the fire. Helga alerted the staff and an hour later it was discovered that this resident had fallen and was on the floor of his apartment for 48 hours. If not for Helga’s observant and concerned nature, who knows how long this fellow would have suffered on the floor?
How wonderful is it that Helga has taken such good care of our clients? Really wonderful. But she does not discriminate…she also takes outstanding care of the other residents in the retirement home, and that is what makes her an angel.
Thank you Helga, you make us so proud to be on the same team with you!
Dan
