Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
Caregiver in Jenison MI
Unconditional love. Best friend. Constant companion. These are all words associated with the loyal and faithful human sidekick, dogs. Those that have experienced their affection know the truth of the prevalent bumper sticker: “Who’s saving who?” –a tribute to dogs and those that adopt them from shelters. October is Adopt a Shelter Dog month, making this the perfect time to consider rescuing man’s best friend.
Dogs and the Elderly
There can be some hesitation when adopting a dog for a senior. Will they be able to take care of it appropriately? Will it be more trouble than it’s worth? The truth is the companionship they bring to those that spend much of their time alone is invaluable. Studies confirm that owning a dog can lessen depression, increase social interactions, decrease doctor visits and improve heart health. A tall order for our friend, the canine, but one he truly stands up to.
Considerations
Family caregivers do need to be aware of the ramifications of pet ownership for the elderly and also gain knowledge of the “right” breed for their aging relative. While many family members believe a large breed known for protection, such as a German Shepherd or a Rottweiler, may be the right choice, there are some pitfalls to consider. These breeds need to know who is Alpha and to be trained accordingly. Another consideration, unless properly trained, their tendency to pull on the leash while being walked or jump up on guests may be difficult for a senior to handle. The health of the dog is also a consideration. Mixed-breeds tend to have less health concerns than pure-breeds. And a puppy, while extremely darling, requires potty training, chewing behavior modification (unless being shoeless is not an issue) and a lot of attention.
Breeds to Consider
As previously noted, mixed breeds are, generally, a good option and the predominant type of dog found in shelters. Finding one with some poodle or dachshund in the mix is a good fit for seniors. Both these breeds tend to have great personalities—fun, playful and smart. The Maltese and Shih Tzu make great lap dogs and are a good size for cuddlers.
Care
Of course, dogs need as much attention as they give. If an elderly person appreciates the company, but cannot take them out for daily walks or does not have the mental acuity to know when feeding time is, other alternatives can be considered. An in-home senior care service provider can help with dog care in order to make sure both dog and senior are well-cared for.
