Do Something Special for Father's Day
Caregiver in Jenison MI
With Father’s Day on the horizon, you might be wondering what you can do for your elderly dad. He may have everything he really needs, and may not even have a big list of “wants” anymore. Still, if you want to do something that will really help him out, you might consider hiring a live-in caregiver for him. Especially if he’s slowing down a lot and having trouble getting around or doing daily life tasks, a caregiver can make a lot of difference in his quality of life. A lot of older people – especially older men – don’t want to admit that they need help, so they just try to do the best they can. Unfortunately, that can put them at risk of everything from poor nutrition to falling.
A live-in caregiver can help with the basics like bathing and dressing, but can also help with housework, meal preparation, and make sure medications are given on time and in the right dosages. Those are all important things that you want your dad to have, but moving him into a nursing home or assisted living facility might not be realistic. Many older people don’t want to leave their home, especially if they’ve lived there for a long period of time and have a lot of memories there. They might prefer to have those memories around them, instead of living somewhere that’s new and different. While understandable, they can be in danger if they live alone and have physical or cognitive issues.
The way to reduce that risk is to hire a caregiver. That way, your elderly dad can retain his independence by staying in his own home, where he’s comfortable. You’ll have peace of mind, too, because you’ll know your dad’s being taken good care of, and that his risk of falling, mixing up medications, or having other problems is greatly reduced. If something does go wrong, there will be someone there who can help him or call for medical attention, too. A lot of older people end up in the hospital or a care facility not just because they fell or had a medical event, but because no one was there to help them at the time.
Avoiding all that and giving yourself and your senior dad peace of mind can be a great gift for Father’s Day. The companionship a caregiver provides can also help, since an elderly person living alone can get very lonely and even depressed. That’s more likely to happen if they can’t get out much or don’t have family, but can still happen to more active seniors who go home to an empty house. Just having someone there to talk to can make all the difference.
