Creative Projects to Do With Your Parent during What Will Be Your Legacy Month
Elder Care in Cascade MI
Leaving a legacy is something that many elderly adults very much want to know that they are doing as they get older. This is about ensuring that the generations that come after them will know about them and what they have done in their lives to impact their family as well as the world around them. For an aging adult this can make them feel more in control and confident about their later years.
August is What Will Be Your Legacy Month. This is the ideal opportunity for your aging parent to engage in creative activities that you and the future generations of your family can cherish into the future. Let these ideas inspire you for fun and meaningful projects that your parent can do to leave a legacy for the future:
- Clothing quilt. Most people go through their clothing every year and take out items that they no longer wear or no longer want. If your parent does this, encourage them not to throw the items away, but to keep them for creating a special quilt. Pieces such as T-shirts and cotton blouses are perfect for this project. Cut them into like-size squares and intersperse them with accent fabrics that they can then stitch together to create the quilt. They can also use buttons, swatches, and trims from clothing to add special touches.
- Family tree. If your parent enjoy visual arts such as painting or drawing, encourage them to create a family tree. They can fill in the names and information of the family members that they know, and then together you can research other generations to fill in more of the tree. You can then display this piece in the home or keep it saved to share with your children and grandchildren later in life.
- Journal albums. Scrapbooking can be complicated and only provide space for limited memories. Instead, encourage your parent to put pictures, ticket stubs, or other pieces of memorabilia in archival quality albums and then add in journaling. This journaling should give as much detail about those items as possible so that later you can look back through these and find out more about your parent and their life, as well as other generations of your family.
Doing activities together is one of the ways that elder care can be a great choice for helping your parent to maintain better mental and emotional health, keep their mind sharp and strong, and encourage greater activity and involvement. Through these activities with an elderly home care services provider, your aging parent can enjoy a more fulfilling lifestyle as they age in place. This can be especially beneficial to your aging loved one if you are a distance caregiver an unable to be with your senior as often as you would like to be. These activities offer valuable companionship and support to your loved one so that they can live the quality of life that you know they desire and deserve.
