Is Your Elderly Loved One's Cane the Right Height for Her?
Having a cane at her disposal can help your elderly loved one to get around much more easily than without any assistance. The problem is that if the cane isn’t the right height, it can cause more problems than it solves for your elderly loved one.
Watch Your Loved One Use Her Cane
If you’re not sure whether your loved one’s cane is the right height for her, watch her when she’s using her cane. She may have difficulty with her balance if the height is wrong or her wrist and arm may look uncomfortable. Your loved one might even complain of pain in her elbow, shoulder, or wrist. You can also ask your loved one to describe to you anything that doesn’t feel right.
Measure Your Loved One’s Optimal Cane Height
Have your loved one stand near a counter or a chair to balance herself. She should let the arm that she normally uses with her cane hang down toward the ground. Using a measuring tape, measure from the floor to the bend of her wrist. That is the optimal length you’re looking for with your loved one’s cane.
Adjust Her Cane, if Possible
Some canes are adjustable. If that’s the case for your elderly loved one, then the task is much easier than you think. Each adjustable cane is slightly different, so follow the instructions for your loved one’s cane. Unfortunately, some canes aren’t adjustable, so you’re going to have to find one that is either able to adjust to the desired length or one that’s already that length.
Keep Measurement Information Handy
It’s a good idea to keep the measurement information for your loved one’s cane handy. Putting it in your wallet can ensure that the information is there when you need it. Another option is to store the information in your smartphone somewhere you’re likely to look when you need to. It’s also a good idea to periodically measure your loved one again to make sure that the cane is still the right length for her.
If you need some extra help getting an accurate measurement, ask your loved one’s elderly care providers for some assistance.
