4 Ways to Help Keep Your Loved One's Social Life Active
Home Care in Jenison MI
It’s not unusual for elderly loved ones to isolate themselves socially, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some ideas for helping your loved one to live a more active social life.
Encourage Visitors
Sometimes friends and family members might think that your loved one doesn’t want visitors or that she’s not feeling well. When that happens, they’re likely to avoid visiting or even asking about stopping by. Encourage visitors to stop by unless it’s too taxing for your loved one. In that case, you might consider keeping one day a week for visitors who can “sign up” in advance to come by and spend a few minutes with your loved one.
Keep Limitations in Mind
It’s easy to make plans and then realize that you or your loved one are simply tapped out for the day. Or you receive an invitation that you know is going to be exhausting for your loved one, but she still wants to see the people who issued the invitation. Make your loved one’s limitations transparent for friends and family members so that they’ll understand why you decline an invitation or why you must modify the circumstances in order to accept.
Consider Senior Centers and Adult Day Care Centers
Senior centers and adult day care centers are places where your loved one can meet up with people her own age that she already knows and meet new people, as well. Both types of locations often have events scheduled for your loved one throughout the day that she can join in on. An added benefit is that you can often leave your loved one there safely and take time for yourself for a bit.
Go Places Together
Don’t forget that you can also go to museums, parks, or other places with your loved one. Those outings might be part of a senior outing or you can make your own schedule. Keep in mind that if you aren’t able to be there with your loved one, there’s no need for her to stay home alone. Her home care providers can go with her to the zoo or the park, too.
Keeping an active social life doesn’t have to be difficult for your elderly loved one.
