Having your aging dad take better care of his health is easier said than done. For most men, if they have been eating the same foods and lacking exercise for years, chances are they are not going to want to change now. However, by encouraging them to make healthier lifestyle choices and go out on the town every once in a while has proven to be beneficial to their mood. Eat plenty of nuts
Once men hit the age of 50, their metabolism drastically reduces, making it much easier for the love one you are providing in-home care for to gain weight. The best way to keep them from gaining weight is by encouraging them to eat less. One tried and true way to help your aging dad feel full longer is to eat a handful of almonds when the need to eat arises. If he plans on leaving the house, have him fill a small container, such as a mint container, with almonds in order for him to have a healthy snack when he is hungry.
Help them find a purpose
Especially for elder men, they are less inclined to make healthy changes to their diet and physical activity if they do not have a purpose. For years they were most likely identified by their career, but as soon as retirement hits, they find themselves at a loss. By having a low self-worth, your loved one is at risk for depression, excessive drinking, and other health issues. Studies have shown that by having a higher purpose in life, the risk of death and cognitive decline will be reduced.
Stay strong
By having a weak handshake and low body strength, your loved one is at a greater risk for stroke, heart attack, and death. Their lack of strength can lead to your loved one’s body being frail and not able to do even the simplest tasks by themselves, such as walking up the stairs. By having a strength-training program, they will be able to build stamina, boost their health, and do more things by themselves. Keep in mind that before your loved one can begin any exercise program it needs to be approved by their doctor to make sure it is safe for them to do.
Aim for 7 hours of sleep per night
Needing 8 hours of sleep is a thing of the past, but 7 is the new magic number for improved brain health. Research shows that a lack of sleep will cause the brain to age at a faster rate, but by aiming for at least 7 hours of sleep a night, your loved one will have better cognitive skills, memory, and will help reverse their brain’s aging process.
By making these few small changes to your loved one’s daily routine, they are bound to live longer, healthier lives.
