Quality of Life or More Time: Senior Care Considerations in Lowell, MI
Sometimes, when you’re trying to determine what senior care would be ideal for your loved one, you may be caught in a tough dilemma. The most important thing for you might be that your loved one has a high quality of life, meaning that they get the best care for right here and now, but they would rather have more time.
Or, you may be hoping that your loved one will agree to fight the illness that threatens their life, but they would prefer to spend their remaining time in this life in as much comfort, free of as much pain as possible.
This is a question about the quality of life versus more time in it. When you’re tasked with finding the right senior health care services, you may think that you know what’s best, but there are times when you need to separate your ego, or your own desires, from what the elderly individual would want most.
Taking steps to provide the right level of senior care.
It’s not easy to witness someone you care about and love give up on themselves, but is that really what they are doing when they claim that they would rather be comfortable during the time that they have than to fight through painful chemo and radiation, for example, one more time to have a stake at low odds of survival?
No, it’s not. Most of the time, when elderly patients accept their diagnosis and decide that they would rather be comfortable than to fight for more time, they lived a good, long life. They know what it means to go through the fighting process and they would rather let nature take its course and be as comfortable as possible.
This doesn’t mean that you have to agree with their assessment or their wishes, but you should certainly respect them. In the end, it’s not up to us to decide what another person does with the time that they have on this earth. It is an opportunity and a privilege, though, to help them be as happy and comfortable with that time they have.
There are so many different types of senior health care services that you can rely on for your loved one. Which one you choose should meet their needs, whether they are going to continue the fight, or if they just want to be comfortable and as content as possible during their remaining time.
