Senior Home Care Aide: Household Chores
What Household Chores Does a Senior Home Care Aide Help With?
Your dad’s getting older and slowing down. Because his health and stamina are changing, he struggles to keep up with everything he needs to do around his home. Take a look at the different services caregivers offer to help your dad as he ages at home.
Floors and Dusting
Whether your dad has carpeted floors, hardwood, vinyl, tile, laminate, or linoleum, they need to be cared for. A caregiver can vacuum or sweep them and use a dust mop as needed. Once floors are done, all of the surfaces can be dusted to remove any dust that was stirred up while vacuuming.
Laundry and Bed Care
Laundry is one of the popular services from senior home care agencies. Your dad has a caregiver to change his sheets and towels each week. His caregiver can gather the dirty clothes, sheets, and towels and run a load of wash. When it’s done, his caregiver will move things to the dryer. Dried clothes and linens are folded or hung up and put where it goes. The bed is made with clean sheets, and pillows are sprayed with sanitizer as needed.
Dishes and Counters
Caregivers are available to wash dishes, dry them, and put them away. If your dad has a dishwasher, his caregiver can load it, set the appropriate cycle, and put the dishes away when the cycle is complete. While the dishwasher runs or after dishes are put away, the caregiver can use a disinfectant spray and wipe down the counters. Items that don’t belong on the counter get put away. If a spice jar was used while cooking, it’s put back where it goes.
Tidying Up
A big part of household chores is simply tidying up. The mail gets tossed on the table and ignored. New purchases are put on counters for now. Caregivers can address this clutter and make sure it has a place to go and is properly organized.
Transportation
One household chore you may not think about is keeping his home stocked with the things he needs. He needs to keep items like toilet paper, cleaners, and groceries on hand. If he runs out, he needs to be able to get them. Online ordering can help, but it’s not always enough.
Your dad may be taking medications that make it hard for him to safely drive a car. His health may change enough that driving on his own is unsafe. Caregivers can drive your dad to his medical appointments.
Your dad can have a ride to stores and restaurants and home gardening suppliers. He has a caregiver to drive him to the pharmacy to pick up his refill. Senior home care can do so much to help your dad maintain his independence.
