The Benefits and Limitations of Various Senior Care Options in Rockford, MI
There are many different types of benefits to senior care. There are also some limitations. The more that you know about these, the more likely you’ll be to help your elderly loved one choose the best one for their needs.
The most common types of senior care services are home care, assisted living, and nursing home care. Nursing home care is generally reserved for those individuals who require a high level of nursing care and may not be able to get out of bed. This could be for recent stroke victims, individuals who are recovering from a broken hip or hip replacement, or other major surgery, recovering from a heart attack, and so on.
This is the most expensive form of senior care as well and many people who might think that their loved one needs nursing home care will realize that they could hire senior home services instead, save money, and allow their loved one to remain in the comfort of their own home while they recover, or continue to live life to its fullest.
Next is assisted living. This may be a viable option for those who don’t want to tend to their home’s maintenance, who would rather be in a community with other people their own age, and who may require some level of assistance throughout the day. This is slightly less expensive, on average, and still more costly than home care.
Assisted living can provide the senior with his or her own room and they may even have the option to prepare their own meals in their room, while most facilities do have a restaurant or other dining facility on the premises. Many will offer transportation services to doctor’s appointments, shopping, and other outings.
A resident will usually have to give up many of their possessions, or put them in storage, because there is not a lot of room in these residences.
Finally, you have home care, which is the most common and affordable senior care option. This allows the senior to remain in the comfort of their own home while receiving a high level of support. They could have an aide who assists with basic care needs, or they could also rely on nursing care, therapists (physical as well as mental health counselors) and more.
If you have a loved one who may require any type of senior care, there are plenty of options available. Learn about them all and then talk to them about what might be best for them. Don’t make the decision for them; it’s their right to decide what they want.
