While flaxseed isn’t a new product, it seems to be popping up everywhere lately.  You may see it bagged in health stores, mixed into whole grain bread, and even in chips and crackers.  But, why Senior-Care-Grand-Rapids-MIthe sudden popularity?  The flaxseed is just a teeny tiny seed, but research is beginning to show that this little seed may have big health benefits for everyone, including seniors.  If flaxseed is something that you’ve been wanting to try, but haven’t yet, read on for some facts about flaxseed and what it can do for you.

What is Flaxseed?

The flax plant has traditionally been used to make textiles.  However, the tiny seeds of the plant are edible and nutritious.  There are two types of flaxseed, brown and yellow, but they both have similar tastes and nutritional content.  Flaxseed can be eaten whole, but to get the best health benefits, it is best to grind the seeds (in a coffee bean grinder) first before adding them to food.  Seniors can also get the health benefits of flaxseed by using flaxseed oil in their cooking.  Flaxseed oil is made by cold-pressing the flaxseed.

How is Flaxseed Eaten?

Ground flaxseed can be added to virtually any baked good or bread simply by mixing some into the dough.  Flaxseed does have its own nutty flavor, so if using a large amount it may alter the taste.  Ground flaxseed can be added to many other foods, as well, including oatmeal, yogurt, pasta sauce, meatballs or meatloaf, and smoothies.

What are the Health Benefits of Flaxseed?

•   Flaxseed is high in fiber which is excellent for the digestive system.  Its high fiber content also makes it a great food for those who want to lower their cholesterol levels and for those with type 2 diabetes who want to lower their blood sugar.

•   Flaxseed is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids which have numerous health benefits for seniors.  Omega 3 fatty acids can help bone loss, they are good for brain health, and they can prevent inflammation.

•   Flaxseed is rich in B vitamins which have many health benefits including increasing energy and promoting a happy mood.

•   Some research has shown that eating flaxseed can reduce bone loss, fight cancer, and increase immunity.

Note:  Flaxseed isn’t for everyone.  Seniors with certain medical conditions like Crohn’s disease or IBS may need to avoid flaxseed.  If you are unsure about how flaxseed may affect your current health condition, it is best to talk to a doctor before adding flaxseed to your diet.
