What Should a Loved One with COPD Eat?

Elder Care in East Grand Rapids MI: What Should a Loved One with COPD Eat?

If your loved one has COPD, you’ve probably already found that some foods help her body to get through a day much better than other foods do. But what types of foods are the better choices for a loved one who has COPD?

Breakfast Is Definitely the Most Important Meal of the Day.

Breakfast is usually called the most important meal of the day, but it’s especially important for a loved one with COPD. Breathing and struggling to breathe can burn a lot of energy that your loved one needs in order to do things later in the day, like eating. Having more food earlier in the day can help your loved one stay fueled properly.

Nutrient-dense Foods Are the Priority.

Foods that have a payload of nutrients are the ones you need to stick to for your loved one. Comfort foods provide comfort, but they’re not always the best nutritional choice. If your loved one is looking for comfort foods more often, bump up the nutritional value by adding vegetables and protein whenever you can.

Fiber Helps Quite a Bit.

Fiber, especially from fruits, vegetables, and oatmeal, can help your loved one to get the fiber that she needs while also getting other nutrients. If she’s having trouble with regularity, bumping up her fiber intake can also help with that issue.

Potassium Might Be Important.

Some people with COPD might also take a diuretic, sometimes called a “water pill.” This can help to alleviate buildup of fluid in the lungs and in the extremities. Your senior’s doctor might recommend upping her potassium intake, especially by eating foods such as oranges and bananas. In extreme cases, your loved one’s doctor might prescribe a potassium supplement.

Boost Protein Levels.

Protein, especially from sources such as lean meats and eggs, can help your elderly family member’s body stay strong. If your loved one still isn’t getting enough protein, consider adding protein powder to other foods, such as soups, cereal, and comfort foods like mashed potatoes. Using an unflavored protein powder allows it to sneak in unnoticed.

Consider hiring elder care providers to help you and your senior stick to an eating plan that gives her all the nutrients that she needs.
