What Techniques Can You Use to Calm Down When You're Frustrated?
Dealing with frustration adequately means that you need a combination of both long-term solutions and fixes that you can pull out of your toolkit quickly. Start making a list of the tactics that work for you so that you know what you can try when you’re in a pinch.
1. Count to Ten.
Counting to ten may sound silly as a frustration-relief tactic, but it works and you can do it anywhere. You can also switch things up and count backwards from ten to one. If you really want to get fancy, learn how to count to ten in a few different languages and try those the next time you’re feeling frustrated.
2. Practice Deep Breathing.
Taking a few deep breaths can do a lot to calm your body and your brain. When you’re frustrated or upset, you’re more likely to take fast, shallow breaths. Breathing deeply sends a message to your brain that everything is fine and that it can stand down.
3. Sing, Dance, or Just Blast Some Music.
Sometimes what you need to do when you’re incredibly frustrated is to simply turn on your favorite music as loud as you can and sing along or dance like crazy. This helps you to burn off excess energy and to send it somewhere constructive rather than stewing in the moment.
4. Meditate Regularly.
Meditation can help you to achieve calm when you’re actually frustrated but it can also help you to avoid feeling frustrated as often. It’s not as complicated as it sounds, either. Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes, then focus on your breathing and on redirecting your thoughts. Ideally you want to keep your mind as clear as possible.
5. Call a Friend.
One reason that you as a family caregiver can end up feeling frustrated so often is that your life as you knew it is not the same as it was. You had more time to socialize and to maintain relationships that you treasure. Reach out to friends you haven’t talked to in a while and just catch up.
Make a list of some of your favorite activities. Label them as either fast solutions or those that will give you more long-term effects. That way you can focus on what you need in a given situation.
