Why Doesn't Your Aging Adult Want to Talk about Driving?
It’s possible that you’ve been trying to talk to your senior about her future with driving, but she might be dodging any openings you’ve made. What could be causing her to do that?
She Doesn’t Want to Be Stuck at Home.
One of the problems your senior might see in changing her driving habits is that she doesn’t want to be stuck at her home with no way to get anywhere. It’s not an uncommon situation that someone doesn’t necessarily have anywhere they want to go, until they have no way to get there. So while you might think that your senior doesn’t have a bustling social life, it can still be important to her to feel as if she can still be mobile.
She Doesn’t Want to Be Dependent on Others for Transportation.
You might have several options lined up for your aging family member ranging from local transportation options to senior care providers who drive for her, but that still leaves her dependent on others. That might be chafing to your aging adult and cause her to want to avoid the situation altogether.
She Might Feel Like a Burden.
If you or other family members are also pitching in to help with transportation, your senior may also be worried that she’s a burden to all of you. Even if you insist that she’s not a burden in the slightest that may not change how she feels. Proving to your senior that she has the help that she needs whenever she needs it may take time and extra effort on your part.
Her Life Will Change.
The bottom line is that your elderly family member knows that this is going to be a big change in her life. She may not know exactly how this will change her life, but it can still be scary to face that kind of significant change. Let your elderly family member know that you’re there for her, no matter what you both decide about her future with driving.
Once you figure out what objections or combination of objections affect your senior, you can formulate a plan to get to the root of the issue. Not talking about the driving issue isn’t an option.
