4 Safety Tips for Gardening with Home Care Services
Home Care in Cascade MI
Spring is here and that means people are going to be spending more time outside. The senior in your life may be looking to garden once again. In truth, just because some elderly individuals require assistance or may seem unsteady on their feet from time to time, that doesn’t mean they have to stop pursuing activities that are interesting to them. Gardening can be a great way for a senior to get exercise, get exposed to sunlight, and gain the benefits that outdoor living has to offer.
They may need to take extra precautions when gardening, but with an experienced in-home care provider, especially one who has already worked with other seniors who enjoy gardening, it can be a safe and tremendously beneficial past time.
Below are four safety tips to keep in mind for the senior planning on gardening this year.
1. Use help when it’s available. If the senior is relying on a professional caregiver to come to his home on a regular basis, that home care aide will likely be more than willing and able to assist him in getting out to the garden, working in it, and making sure he is safe. The senior should be more than willing and able to rely on that assistance when it is available.
2. Protect against the sun. Getting exposure to direct sunlight is beneficial because that’s really the only way that vitamin D can be synthesized in the body, but the senior needs to protect his or her skin and eyes. They should wear a large brimmed hat, protective clothing, and wraparound sunglasses to keep them safe throughout the season.
3. Take it easy. If the senior tries to overdo it, do more than they are physically capable of doing, she could be putting herself at risk. It’s important that she temper her enthusiasm with her actual physical capabilities.
4. Pay attention to the forecast. Thunderstorms can seemingly strike all of a sudden.
These four safety tips can make gardening possible and safer for the senior relying on home care services.
