Making Your Senior’s Vehicle Safe for Spring

April is Car Care Month, and a great time to do some car spring cleaning with your elderly loved one. If your elderly loved one is still driving, it’s more important than ever to ensure that their vehicle stays in its best shape and is a reliable source of transportation for them. If they can no longer drive, senior home care services can provide transportation and other types of care.
Just like many people do an annual spring cleaning of their home, April can be a great time to remember to perform some spring cleaning on your loved one’s vehicle.
Car Care You and Your Loved One Can Do
Spending a morning or an afternoon with your loved one getting their car ready for spring can be a great way to connect and enjoy each other’s company while completing a very important task. Winter months can be hard on a car, both the interior and exterior. April is a great time to clean the interior and exterior of the vehicle, check fluid levels, and restock any emergency kits kept in the car.
If you don’t often ride with your loved one driving, spring is another good time to ask your elderly loved one to take you for a drive around the area. Sitting in the passenger seat can give you a better idea about how well your loved one is managing the roads. If desired, many driving academies often offer refresher courses for seniors as well, to help them stay on top of any new rules of the road that have been implemented since they got their license, most likely decades ago.
Tasks to Leave to the Experts
Find a trusted mechanic and have a springtime inspection of your loved one’s vehicle to make sure all of the necessary parts of the car are still in good shape and will continue to keep your loved one safe on the road. Have them review the brakes, battery, and wheels – all of which can get a rough workout over the winter. Depending on the age of your loved one’s vehicle, spring is also a good time to catch up on those important updates and replacements needed due to mileage.
When Driving Skills Diminish
If your loved one is at the point where they are no longer comfortable driving at certain times of the day, during specific weather disturbances, or being behind the wheel in unknown locations, now can also be a good time to find some transportation assistance for your elderly loved one.
Senior home care services offer transportation services for those who are not always comfortable getting behind the wheel by themselves anymore. With a senior home care provider behind the wheel, your loved one can receive personalized and reliable transportation help they might need. You can arrange for senior home care staff to provide weekly errand running, transportation, or driving your loved one to and from appointments.
Your loved one may not be ready to give up driving altogether. With senior home care providers filling in those gaps where they aren’t comfortable on the road alone, your loved one can continue to enjoy all the freedom they’ve always had.
